So, You Want to Become a Real Estate Agent?

As long as people need homes, they'll need real estate agents. Being able to sell homes is not something that just anyone can do, as you need to be honest, persuasive, motivated, and patient. It's a well-paying career path that involves helping people with one of the biggest decisions of their life, but it takes time to climb up the ladder to real estate success.

Hit the books:

Whether you're wondering how to get real estate license in Oregon or some other state, you'll need to pass a licensing exam. Each state's exam is intensive and meant to establish one's competency in understanding the nuances of various real estate laws. To prepare, you need to study effectively. Refrain from cramming the night before. Give yourself plenty of time to review and enlist friends to help quiz you.

Join a team:

Once you've passed your licensing exam with flying colors, you need to find a brokerage to join. Earning your license is the first step, but you also need to show your worth in other ways. Apply to as many brokerages as possible with a polished resumé that speaks to your qualifications. When you get hired, more experienced agents can act as mentors.

Keep your expectations reasonable:

If you think that you're going to be able to sell the first home you show your first potential buyers, think again. Real estate agents have to deal with constant rejection, especially at the beginning of their careers. That doesn't mean you should have low expectations of yourself, though. Give yourself a flexible goal for when you'll sell your first home by, such as three months.

Earn your customers' trust:

How would you feel about buying a product from a salesperson who seems doubtful about how a product even works? As a real estate agent, you need to convince people that a home is worth buying. Before a showing, you need to do your research and have it committed to memory. When it comes time for the showing, your clients should be impressed by your knowledge.

Be personable:

As a real estate agent, you're not just selling homes. You're also selling customers on yourself. A positive experience with a real estate agent will help homebuyers feel more comfortable about a purchase. You should get to know them as people during the process. A firm handshake, smile, and listening to their needs can make a tremendous difference.

Reflect:

Being a real estate agent can be exhausting and leave you feeling frustrated when something doesn't go as planned. After a sale doesn't go through, take a moment to think about what you could've done differently. Write down what you learned and how it'll affect your future showings. Even when a sale goes through, you can still reflect on what you could improve upon. It's also important to remember that sometimes you do all you can as a real estate agent, but customers just aren't able to make the purchase. Don't beat yourself up when this happens.
